Advanced Metering - Two Utilities Stories
Friday, February 2, 2007
1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. (EST)
There are few issue areas getting as much attention today as advanced metering. The “Smart Metering” section of EPACT directed States and other parties to investigate it and determine whether it should be offered to all customers. At the same time, utilities across the country are starting to talk about Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and how they might use it not only to enable demand response options like time-based pricing, but to deliver benefits in the area of system operations, customer service and outage management. Other parties at the national and regional levels have begun to consider AMI as a foundational element of a “modern” grid.
This next DRCC-sponsored Webinar will feature the advanced metering efforts of two utilities - one on the East Coast that has completed an AMI deployment and one on the West Coast about to begin. Experts from each company will spend the majority of the Webinar talking about what their company has done or is about to do,
Bernard Bujnowski is Director of Advanced Metering for PPL Electric Utilities, a major electric utility in Pennsylvania. He also serves as a Board Member and Officer of the Automatic Meter Reading Association (AMRA). PPL decided in 2001 to move forward to deploy an advanced metering system and presently undertakes hourly measurements via its AMI and Meter Data Management (MDM) system for all of its 1.4 Million electric customers. Bernie will tell Webinar participants how PPL went about its deployment, what lessons they learned and what benefits they have realized.
Paul DeMartini is Director of the AMI Program at Southern California Edison, one of largest electric utilities in the country. SCE recently announced its intention to accelerate its plans to move forward with an AMI deployment and to do so in a way that will support its effort to meet its demand response goals and those of the State. Paul will talk about the development of AMI policy in California and how the utilities in CA have responded to that emerging policy. He will talk specifically about SCE's plans and the system it has designed and is moving forward to implement.
